John Harbaugh Reacts to Ravens' Loss to Steelers Amid Playoff Race, Talks Future as HC

Scott PolacekJan 5, 2026

John Harbaugh's 18th season as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens ended in stunning fashion with Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he made it clear he wants to return for a 19th year.

"Yeah, I love these guys," he told reporters when asked if he wants to come back next season.

It is a question that he wouldn't have faced in the immediate aftermath had the Ravens won, as the game was for the AFC North title and a spot in the playoffs. And it seemed like the Ravens were going to win when Lamar Jackson drove them into field-goal range in the final minute.

However, Tyler Loop missed what would have been the game-winning kick, which propelled the Steelers into the postseason.

"We just didn't play well enough to close it out," Harbaugh said.

While the head coach is a Super Bowl champion who has led Baltimore to the playoffs in 12 of his 18 seasons at the helm, this isn't the first time he has addressed his job status this season.

"I try to do the job, not try to keep the job," Harbaugh told reporters last month. "My focus has been for the last 18 years here and the last 41 years in coaching is to try to do the best job I can today and fight as hard as I can so the guys have the best chance to be successful today. And anything after today, I'm not thinking about because it's not given for us to think about."

Given the previous speculation about his job security and Sunday's outcome, it was a natural area of focus after the game.

But Jackson didn't want to talk about it and instead reflected on the loss:

It should be noted NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported before Sunday's game that the "expectation" was Harbaugh will return for the 2026 campaign regardless of the outcome against the Steelers.

It seems like that is also what the head coach wants given his latest comments, so expect him to be back on the sidelines in 2026.
