Travis Kelce Addresses Timeline to Decide on Chiefs Future, Possible NFL Retirement

Andrew PetersJan 5, 2026

Travis Kelce seemingly hasn't made a decision about his future in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs star tight end said after Sunday's season finale against the Las Vegas Raiders that he's unsure when he'll make the call about whether he'll retire.

"Who knows?" Kelce told reporters. "Either it hits me quick or I've got to take some time. Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to kind of give this one [year] a shot. We'll see."

With the Chiefs absent from the playoffs for the first time since 2014, the biggest question looming is what Kelce plans to do.

On one hand, he still appears to have some football left in him after recording 851 yards and five touchdowns while avoiding any injuries. He might also want to end on better terms, considering the Chiefs missed the postseason and his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, suffered a season-ending torn ACL last month.

On the other hand, the 36-year-old has plenty to keep him occupied off the field, from his podcast, New Heights, to his budding acting career, to his upcoming marriage to pop star Taylor Swift.

He's also accomplished just about everything at this point, winning three Super Bowls and earning 11 Pro Bowl nods. He's well on his way to the Hall of Fame after one of the best careers by a tight end ever.

While Kelce's NFL future is in question, the team he'd play for if he comes back for another year may not be. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last week that his "understanding" is that Kansas City is the only team Kelce would play for if he opts to continue his career.
