Colts Reportedly Make Decision on Shane Steichen, Chris Ballard's Futures amid Rumors

Andrew PetersJan 4, 2026

The Indianapolis Colts reportedly have no plans of making a coaching change this offseason.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Colts plan to bring back head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard in 2026.

The decision comes after the Colts wrapped up an 8-9 season that saw them miss the postseason for a fifth consecutive year. Steichen, who took over in 2023, has yet to make the playoffs as Indianapolis' head coach.

For much of the season, the Colts looked more like a Super Bowl contender than they did a team bound for a postseason absence. Indianapolis started the year 8-2 with a handful of impressive wins, including over the Denver Broncos, who can earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a win on Sunday.

After that hot start, it was an all-out collapse for the Colts. After losing games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans, disaster struck as quarterback Daniel Jones, who was in the midst of a breakout season, suffered a season-ending torn Achilles.

Indianapolis went on to lose its final seven games, leaving it with nothing to show for after a season that started so promising.

While the Colts finished the year 8-9 for a second consecutive season, it's fair to say that this was Steichen and Co.'s most promising season yet. He showed what he can do when he has a capable quarterback, so Indianapolis could be a legit playoff contender once Jones is back under center.

Clearly, the Colts' ownership has faith in Steichen and Ballard.
