NFL Rumors on Raheem Morris, Terry Fontenot's Falcons Job Security Amid Hot Seat Buzz

Adam WellsJan 3, 2026

Ahead of their season finale on Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons are still weighing their options with general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the feeling around the NFL right now is that Morris will be retained and Fontenot won't return.

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer previously reported Falcons owner Arthur Blank hired the Sportsology consulting firm to help conduct "an overall health check" on the state of the organization.

One nugget from Russini's report is that Rick Smith, former general manager of the Houston Texans, is a member of the consulting firm. He has been out of the NFL since leaving the Texans after the 2017 season.

Smith was among the candidates interviewed by the Falcons during the 2020 season when they were searching for a new general manager before Fontenot got the job.

Per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Blank isn't going to make any decisions about the organizational structure until after the end of the season.

One decision that Blank is trying to make happen is adding Falcons legend Matt Ryan to the front office in a "high-profile" role, per a Dec. 28 report from Fox Sports' Jay Glazer.

Glazer added that Ryan is "seriously considering" the offer, though exact details of the role are unclear at this point.

Morris was Atlanta's interim head coach for the final 11 games in 2020 and interviewed for the full-time job going into 2021, but Blank went with Arthur Smith at that time.

The Falcons hired Morris to be their head coach in January 2024. He has a 15-18 record through two seasons with one more game to go this season.

Fontenot has also been involved in many questionable roster decisions over the past two years, including drafting Michael Penix Jr. after signing Kirk Cousins in free agency and trading a 2026 first-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for the 26th pick in 2025 that was used on James Pearce Jr.

During Fontenot's tenure as general manager, the Falcons have a 36-48 record with no winning seasons or playoff appearances.
