Giants Rumors on Joe Schoen's Future, Top HC Candidates Ahead of NFL Week 18 Finale

Adam WellsJan 2, 2026

As the New York Giants prepare to finish their third consecutive losing season and search for a new head coach, general manager Joe Schoen's job appears to be safe.

Per ESPN's Jordan Raanan, the feeling among people who have spoken with the Giants about their coaching search is that Schoen "is coming back" next season.

There have been hints that the Giants weren't going to make a change at general manager.

In the aftermath of Brian Daboll's firing on Nov. 10, Giants owner John Mara said in a statement that Schoen would "lead the search for a new head coach."

It's very rare for a team to have a general manager put together a list of coaching candidates if they aren't going to keep their job. Plans can always change, as we saw at the end of the 2024 season when the Jacksonville Jaguars planned to keep Trent Baalke before reversing course after getting the impression Liam Coen wouldn't take their head coaching job if Baalke was still running the front office.

As for the candidates Schoen is eyeing, Raanan cited Mike McCarthy, Jeff Hafley, Lou Anarumo, Antonio Pierce and Chris Shula among those on the list.

Schoen and Daboll were both hired by the Giants in January 2022. They had immediate success with a 9-7-1 record in their first season that included a playoff victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Since the start of the 2023 season, the Giants have been arguably the worst team in the NFL. Their 12-38 record during that span is tied with the Tennessee Titans for last in the league.

The Giants enter Week 18 with a 3-13 record, marking their second consecutive year with at least 13 losses. They had only lost 13 games in a season twice in the first 100 years of the franchise's existence.

There is a promising young core of talent in place for the Giants that could make them attractive to many coaching candidates. Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, Malik Nabers, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Dexter Lawrence is a pretty good starting point to build a successful team.
