Joe Burrow Won't 'Go Out of My Way' to Stop Myles Garrett From Setting NFL Sack Record

Zach BacharDec 31, 2025

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow discussed his mindset when facing Myles Garrett in Week 18 as the Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher closes in on the NFL's single-season sack record.

"I'm certainly not gonna overcompensate either way," Burrow told reporters Wednesday. "I'm not gonna go out of my way to not let him get the record and I'm not gonna go out of my way to let him get the record, either. I'm gonna go and play football. There's going to be situations that a sack is the best of the bad outcomes of that play and maybe I take one. There's gonna be other situations that I'm about to get sacked and I need to throw it away in that situation."

"It's such a situational game that I don't think you can go in thinking one way or the other every play," he added.

Garrett has compiled 22 sacks heading into the final week of his 2025 campaign, needing just one more to break the current single-season record of 22.5 sacks held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

During the Browns' 13-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17, Garrett was held without a sack. After the game, he expressed his belief that the Steelers were focused on getting the ball out quickly and preventing him from securing the record instead of emerging with a win.

Garrett has experienced plenty of success when facing the Bengals in the past, as his 15 sacks against Cincinnati are the most against any team in his career (via Pro Football Reference).

He also sacked Burrow twice during a Week 1 matchup this season.

Kickoff between the Bengals and Browns in their final game of the year will be on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
