Wednesday's first five matches saw three Americans crashing out of the competition as Jared Donaldson, Christopher Eubanks and Tim Smyczek all lost in straight sets to their respective opponents.
Of the early matches, only Vasek Pospisil and Yen-Hsun Lu went to three sets. The Canadian Pospisil emerged victorious with a 6-4 win in the decisive third. Their match was the longest of the day, lasting two-and-a-half hours.
But two pairs of Americans found success in the doubles tournament when Austin Krajicek and Nicholas Monroe defeated Marcus Daniell and Marcelo Demoliner.
After splitting the first two sets, Krajicek and Monroe pulled out a tiebreaking victory 13-11. But it was another American pair that stole the show.
Coming out of retirement, Andy Roddick joined Mardy Fish, who announced that he will be retiring at the conclusion of the U.S. Open, in a doubles pair that played their first-round match Wednesday night.
Though both have been away from the game for an extended period of time, they showed they've still got it, defeating Yen-Hsun Lu and Jonathan Marray in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. The crowd favorite was serenaded to a standing ovation upon their match-winner. The BB&T Atlanta Open caught the winning duo's reaction:
With five aces on the night, Fish and Roddick won 31 of a possible 42 first service points while saving both of their break points.
The Atlanta Open continues Thursday with the man who crashed Fish out of the singles tournament, Dudi Sela, in action against Benjamin Becker as one of six matches on the day's slate, beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
