Geno Smith Injured, Latest Updates on Raiders QB's Ankle and Week 18 Status

Julia StumbaughDec 28, 2025

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday night's loss to the New York Giants.

Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters about Smith's diagnosis after the 34-10 loss.

Smith left Sunday's loss early in the fourth quarter after throwing his second pick of the game.

The Raiders fell to 2-14 on Sunday, putting the team at last place in the NHL and on track to potentially select first in the 2026 draft.

"He'll get checked out in the morning with MRIs and all that. I don't know what that means, but that's pretty hard to bounce back," Carroll said about Smith's injury. "That might knock him out of next week. We'll have to wait and see."

Smith had gone 20-for-28 with 176 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions prior to his injury.

He was replaced for the end of the game by Kenny Pickett, who completed each of his two pass attempts for 16 yards.

This marked the fifth time Pickett has appeared in a game for the Raiders this season.

His only prior start for the Raiders came when Smith was sidelined by a shoulder injury ahead of a Week 15 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Pickett went 15-for-25 with 99 total yards, no touchdowns and an interception in a 31-0 shutout during that last start.

If Smith is unable to return by next weekend, the Raiders might need to turn to Pickett for a Week 18 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs are heading into the regular season finale missing not just star quarterback Patrick Mahomes but also backup Gardner Minshew to knee injuries.

It could be third-string Chiefs quarterback Chris Oladokun taking on Pickett and the Raiders when these two teams wrap up the regular season next Sunday at Allegiant Stadium.

Which team emerges victorious from that matchup will influence whether the Raiders (2-14) earn the top pick in the upcoming draft or whether 3-13 teams like the New York Giants, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals get a shot at No. 1 next spring.
