Drake Maye Makes NFL History with Incredible Stats as Patriots Romp Jets amid MVP Push

Julia StumbaughDec 28, 2025

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye recorded one of the best passing performances in NFL history during Sunday's road game against the New York Jets.

Maye went 19-for-21 with 256 yards and five touchdowns at MetLife Stadium before he was replaced in the third quarter by Joshua Dobbs.

That made Maye the first quarterback to complete at least 90 percent of his passes while throwing for at least 250 yards and five touchdowns in the same game.

The Patriots had climbed out to a 42-3 lead over the Jets by the time Dobbs came in to play the third quarter.

A win in Week 17 will take the Patriots one step closer to potentially clinching the AFC East.

That's not the only history Maye made during his three quarters against the Jets. The outing also allowed Maye to join Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe as the third quarterback in Patriots history to top 4,000 passing yards in a single season.

Bledsoe achieved the feat three times between 1994 and 1999, while Brady topped the 4,000-yard mark 11 times between 2005 and 2019.

The Patriots are now back in the playoff picture, and have a shot at winning the AFC, behind their next franchise quarterback.

A win will allow the Patriots to clinch the division if the Philadelphia Eagles are able to hold the Buffalo Bills to a loss or tie later on Sunday.

The victory would also keep the Patriots in the running for the top seed in the AFC, although the Denver Broncos currently hold the edge in the race.

The Patriots could ultimately claim the top seed and the first-round bye by ending the season with a Jan. 4 win over the Miami Dolphins, but only if the Broncos lose to the Los Angeles Chargers the same day.

Maye could meanwhile take a step closer to being named an NFL MVP finalist in just his second season in the league. He was already heading into Week 17 as a betting favorite for MVP prior to his historic outing against the Jets.

The 23-year-old is now heading into Week 18 with 4,203 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns and just eight interceptions through 16 games this season.
