Shedeur Sanders Talks Aaron Rodgers Matchup 20 Years After Deion Played vs. QB

Scott PolacekDec 28, 2025

Sunday will be something of a full-circle moment for the Sanders family.

Shedeur Sanders will lead the Cleveland Browns against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which means a matchup with 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers. That is the same 42-year-old Rodgers who faced Shedeur's father, Deion, in a game 20 years ago.

"It's nice, but we got a lot of old people in our locker room, so it be surreal all the time," Shedeur Sanders said of the matchup:

The 23-year-old quarterback was more focused on his matchup against the Steelers defense than the connection between Rodgers and his father, but it is a testament to just how long the veteran quarterback has been in the league that he is playing against the son of a former opponent.

Rodgers is no longer playing at the same level of his peak when he was a four-time league MVP and Super Bowl champion on the Green Bay Packers, but he has bounced back from his significant 2023 Achilles injury and has the Steelers in playoff position in his first season with the team.

Pittsburgh can clinch the AFC North with a win or a tie against the Browns on Sunday and has the opportunity to extend its winning streak to four games.

It already handled the 3-12 Browns once this season, although that October matchup came before Sanders was the starting quarterback.

It remains to be seen whether Sanders will be the long-term answer at the position for Cleveland seeing how he is 1-4 as a starter with six touchdown passes to eight interceptions, but Sunday is a chance to see one of the greatest of all-time operate on the same field.

Rodgers isn't going to add another MVP to his collection this season, but he has still completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,860 yards, 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions while guiding the Steelers to playoff position.

He will look to add to those numbers Sunday, and he doesn't have to worry about Deion Sanders trying to pick him off on the other side like he did so many years ago.
