Berbatov Medical Rumoured Ahead of Potential Villa Move

Tuesday, Sept. 1

ITV.com reported Berbatov is in Birmingham on transfer deadline day. The news outlet added the forward "will need to complete a medical in order to get his move back to England."

No word has come from Villa as to whether the Bulgarian has begun formalities over a move.

According to Peter Edwards of the Daily Express in late-July, Berbatov’s close friend and former Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov informed Tim Sherwood that the former Tottenham, Manchester United and Fulham striker wants a move back to England.

Edwards quoted a source who is “close to the player” in his piece:

"

They need a top striker now because they sold Christian Benteke to Liverpool. You don't have many strikers with experience in the Premier League available at the moment.

I know Dimitar has offers from Germany [Werder Bremen] and Turkey but his desire is to play in England once again. His family also prefers England and this could be his last chance to play there.

"

If Berbatov was to join, he’d bring his nonchalant quality to Villa Park. The forward is very much a luxury player, whose dislike of work rate and closing down is well known. But he has a silky-smooth touch and the ability to carve out openings from absolutely nothing.

As aforementioned, Villa need a striker too. In the twilight of his career, Berbatov would play a bit-part role in this Villa squad and his experience would be a vital commodity in what is a young group of players.

Sherwood will know the player well from his time at Tottenham and on a free transfer, it’d be a relatively low-risk move. If the mercurial Bulgarian could produce a few more nonchalant moments of magic in the iconic claret and blue next season, it’d be a deal worth pursuing for the Villans.
