Myles Garrett Breaks NFL Sack Record, Watch Browns Star Make History vs. Joe Burrow

Andrew PetersJan 4, 2026

Amid what has been a dominant 2025 campaign for Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns star pass rusher has now made history.

Garrett sacked Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow on Sunday in the 2025 regular-season finale to record his 23rd sack. With that sack, he broke the single-season sack record of 22.5 previously held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

Garrett shared an emotional moment with his teammates and coaches after breaking the record:

Garrett has been one of the best defensive players in the NFL since he was drafted in 2017, but he reached a new level in 2025.

In the Browns' Week 8 contest against the New England Patriots, Garrett recorded a career-high five sacks. Two weeks later, against the Baltimore Ravens, he had four sacks.

"I don't even think about it as a want — I just think about something that I'm going to knock down," Garrett told reporters in November when asked about breaking the sack record. "It's already been written in my mind that it's going just how far I'm going to take it. So, just going to go out there and do what I do, and whatever number I end up at."

Garrett clearly felt like he deserved to win Defensive Player of the Year last year, so that might have been part of his motivation coming into this year. If anyone other than Garrett earns the award this year, it will be a surprise.

Garrett signed a massive four-year, $160 million contract to stay with the Browns this offseason, and he's been worth every penny and more this season. While Cleveland won't be in the playoffs this year, Garrett can still call the 2025 campaign a success after one of the best individual seasons by a defensive player in NFL history.
