Matt Cassel Campaigns to Be Chiefs QB1 After Patrick Mahomes, Minshew Injuries
It appears that another former NFL quarterback is looking to follow Philip Rivers' footsteps to return to the league.
Matt Cassel, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2018, took to social media to throw his hat in the ring to be the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback for the final two weeks of the 2025 season following season-ending injuries suffered by star signal-caller Patrick Mahomes and veteran backup Gardner Minshew.

The Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2014 with their Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and they lost Mahomes to a torn ACL in the waning moments of that game. Minshew started Sunday's matchup against the Tennessee Titans but was forced to exit early after also suffering a knee injury, and Kansas City fell 26-9 for its fourth straight loss.
Cassel played for the Chiefs from 2009 to 2012, making 47 of his 81 career starts with the franchise. He earned his lone Pro Bowl selection in 2010 after throwing a career-high 27 touchdown passes.
The Indianapolis Colts shocked the football world when they coaxed Rivers out of retirement, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for the Chiefs to bring Cassel back into the fold.
However, Kansas City doesn't have a lot of time to decide, as it will be in action against the first-place Denver Broncos on Christmas Day.
