Tom Brady Says He'd 'Whoop Ass' If He Ended NFL Retirement At 48 Years Old

Timothy RappDec 18, 2025

Anything you can do, Tom can do older.

Las Vegas Raiders minority owner and Fox Sports announcer Tom Brady told Shaquille O'Neal and Adam Lefkoe on Wednesday's The Big Podcast with Shaq that he believes he could still play in the NFL at the age of 48 in the wake of Philip Rivers making a stunning return to the league at 44.

"I'd whoop ass right now," he said (h/t Anna Lazarus Caplan of People). "I could go out there and play. Give me a month, I mean, I could go play with anybody."

Brady did acknowledge that he wouldn't want to return for an entire season if he ever had the itch to play in the future.

"I could do it all," he said. "I, just, what I wouldn't want to do is make the commitment to play... it's like basketball season, do you really want to make the commitment to playing 82 games? That takes a lot of training and it's like I don't want to do that anymore."

Given that Brady is a minority owner of the Raiders and in the midst of a 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox Sports, he has other responsibilities that will keep him from ever making such a comeback.

But physically, Brady feels like he could do what Rivers has done.

"Like I said, I took care of my body great," he told Shaq and Lefkoe.

The aforementioned Rivers returned to the Indianapolis Colts last week after Daniel Jones was lost for the season. With Anthony Richardson also on injured reserve the Colts were desperate, and Rivers responded by throwing for 120 yards, a touchdown and an interception in a 19-16 loss against the Seattle Seahawks.

It was very much a "break glass in case of emergency" scenario for the 8-6 Colts, who find themselves mired in a four-game losing streak and are trying to save their season.
