Geno Smith's Injury Status for Raiders vs. Texans Revealed By Pete Carroll

Julia StumbaughDec 19, 2025

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith will return to the field this week against the Houston Texans after hand, shoulder and back injuries sidelined him during Week 15, head coach Pete Carroll announced Friday.

Carroll previously said on Sirius XM NFL there is "a good chance" Smith would start Sunday's Week 16 matchup with the Texans, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith, who returned to Raiders practice on Wednesday, meanwhile told reporters he was "just taking it day by day."

Smith suffered his injuries during a Week 14 loss to the Denver Broncos on Dec. 7.

As of Tuesday, however, Carroll said he felt Smith was "certainly ready to go, from where I saw him this morning."

"He is cranked up and ready," Carroll said Tuesday. "He had a great weekend of rehab. We didn't travel him, so he wouldn't have to sit in the plane for all those hours and be in the cold and all that. He feels good.

"I'll be able to know more, after practice tomorrow, where we're going with that."

The Raiders are heading into Week 16 on an eight-game losing streak, most recently having dropped to 2-12 following last weekend's shutout by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kenny Pickett, who started the Week 15 game in place of Smith, earned a 47.9 passer rating while throwing an interception and taking four sacks in the 31-0 loss.

With Smith set to return against Houston, the Raiders will hope to bounce back from their loss to the Eagles. The Week 16 matchup is set to kick off Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
