What Is Tua Tagovailoa's Future with Dolphins? NFL Fans Sound Off After Benching

The Miami Dolphins could be on the verge of a major transition after demoting starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Wednesday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Dolphins are benching Tagovailoa and turning to rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers as their new starter.

Naturally, fans on social media couldn't help but wonder what the move means for Tagovailoa's future in Miami.

The decision to bench Tagovailoa comes after the Dolphins' 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football, which eliminated them from playoff contention. He threw his NFL-leading 15th interception in the loss, and his two touchdown passes came after the Steelers took a 28-3 lead in the fourth quarter. He also sustained four sacks for the second time in his last three games.

After the loss, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel indicated that he was mulling a change at quarterback.

"I think the quarterback play last night was not good enough, and so for me, everything's on the table," he said on Tuesday, per ESPN.

Miami used the No. 5 pick in the 2020 draft to select Tagovailoa out of Alabama. After a few injury-riddled years that included multiple concussions, he appeared to turn the corner in 2023 when he played all 17 games for the first time and led the league with 4,624 passing yards while throwing a career-high 29 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. He was rewarded with a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension prior to the 2024 season, but struggled to stay healthy once again and appeared in just 11 games that year.

If Tagovailoa doesn't play again this season, he will finish the year with 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. It remains to be seen if he will continue to be in a Dolphins uniform going forward, as they could make it a priority to trade him this offseason.
