Terence Crawford Announces Retirement From Boxing in Video After Canelo Alvarez Fight

Zach BacharDec 16, 2025

Three-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford announced that he's retiring from boxing in a video posted to his YouTube channel on Tuesday.

"I'm stepping away from competition, not because I'm done fighting, but because I've won a different type of battle," Crawford said, via Yahoo Sports. "The one where you walk away on your own terms."

Crawford became the undisputed super middleweight champion with an impressive victory over Canelo Álvarez on Sept. 13, but was stripped of the WBC super middleweight title on Dec. 3 due to a failure to pay sanctioning fees.

Crawford reflected on his career in his retirement announcement.

"Every fighter knows this moment will come, we just never know when," Crawford said at the beginning of his video. "I spent my whole life chasing something. Not belts, not money, not headlines. But that feeling, the one you get when the world doubts you but you keep showing up and you keep proving everyone wrong."

"I fought for my family," he added. "I fought for my city. I fought for the kid I used to be, the one who had nothing but a dream and a pair of gloves. And I did it all my way. I gave this sport every breath I had."

Since becoming a professional boxer in 2008, Crawford has won world championships in five separate weight classes from lightweight to super middleweight. The southpaw boasts a flawless record of 42-0, including 31 knockouts.

Crawford's recent success is highlighted by victories over Errol Spence Jr., Shawn Porter, Israil Madrimov and Kell Brook.

With the 38-year-old's decisive win against Canelo in the rearview mirror as well, he's decided to call it a career.
