NFL Rumors on Mike Tomlin's Steelers Contract and Future amid Hot-Seat Buzz

Doric SamDec 15, 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers' up-and-down year has raised questions about head coach Mike Tomlin's job security, and details about his contract have been revealed.

ESPN's Brooke Pryor reported that Tomlin is under contract with the Steelers through the 2027 season after signing a three-year extension following the 2023 campaign. However, sources reportedly told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the final year of his deal is a club option, with a decision on that due by March 1, 2026.

Pryor added that having an option year typically "has been a feature of Tomlin's previous contracts," with Pittsburgh usually exercising it to keep him in the fold. If the option for 2027 isn't picked up and Tomlin has success in 2026, a source told Pryor that "the team would still 'most likely' extend him."

The Steelers have a 7-6 record entering their matchup against the Miami Dolphins (6-7). They've lost three of their last five games, but they own the tiebreaker over the Baltimore Ravens (7-7) for first place in the AFC North.

While there have been rumors surrounding Tomlin's future with the franchise, it sounds like Pittsburgh isn't concerned by the outside noise.

"There's no panic in the building," a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "That's how weeks like [Week 14] pay off. The people there [including owner Art Rooney II] aren't on social media. It's businesslike there. Mike identifies what the problem is and he digs into the film with his staff to fix it. It's really that simple."
