The San Francisco 49ers selected Indiana RB Kaelon Black with the No. 90 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

Kaelon Black is an impactful runner with low center of gravity and strong leg drive.

Black is a compactly-built runner with a strong base and good balance through initial contact.

Like multiple Hoosiers who follow head Curt Cignetti to IU, the ball-carrier's career started with James Madison. Black experienced inconsistent production and results due to a season-ending injury early in his career. The former 3-star recruit transferred to Indiana in 2024.

- Pressing the line of scrimmage with patience and vision. Black is skilled at finding open lanes to attack, making quick decisions.

- He gets skinny to slip through small creases on the offensive line.

- Black earns his yards after contact. He possesses the balance required to absorb contact and stay on his feet fighting forward. He has a strong base and leg drive, refusing to go down upon first contact.

- The former JMU transfer is a low-center-of-gravity runner, and he converts speed to power at the point of attack. He will lower his shoulder and punish his way through defenders with a head of steam. It's nearly impossible to win the leverage battle against him.

- Black has quick feet and lateral agility to jump cut and exchange gaps if the initial lane is clogged.

- Fearless pass protector. Black steps up against a free runner bearing down and provides firm pass protection for his quarterback.

- Black offers a limited receiving profile. He was rarely deployed as a receiver out of the backfield.

- A shorter build/frame will limit whether he receives a full workload for NFL teams. He will benefit from being the change-of-pace option behind an established starter, who is more suited for a full-time role.

- The Hoosiers' second-leading runner lacks explosive or dynamic athletic traits to raise his ceiling as an impact contributor. He is not known for generating big, explosive game-changing plays.
