Jets Fire Steve Wilks, What to Know About Interim DC Chris Harris for Aaron Glenn

Doric SamDec 15, 2025

After less than a year at the helm, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is already making changes to his coaching staff.

Glenn told reporters on Monday that defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has been relieved of his duties. Chris Harris, who served as the team's defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, has been promoted to interim DC.

The writing had been on the wall for Wilks' eventual dismissal throughout the season. Aside from a few spirited games, the Jets' once-vaunted defense has been a massive disappointment, ranking 30th in the NFL with 28.4 points allowed per game.

Things came to a head in Sunday's demoralizing 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York's second straight loss of more than 20 points. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had his way with the Jets defense, throwing five touchdown passes and rushing for another score for his first career six-touchdown game.

After the game, New York's much-maligned unit couldn't muster the words for what went wrong. Multiple defensive leaders declined to speak to reporters, most notably linebacker Quincy Williams and defensive end Jermaine Johnson.

"I have nothing positive to say," Williams said, per ESPN's Rich Cimini, who described the scene in the locker room as "no bravado, only dejection."

With three games left in the season, it will be up to Harris to try to bring the best out of the Jets' downtrodden defense. The former NFL safety quickly transitioned to coaching after his playing career came to an end and has been on coaching staffs with the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans.

The Jets (3-11) will return to action next Sunday against the New Orleans Saints (4-10) in a game that will be more about draft positioning than anything else.
