BB&T Atlanta Open 2015: Monday Tennis Scores, Results and Updated Draw Schedule

Matt FitzgeraldJul 27, 2015

The BB&T Atlanta Open continues the ATP World Tour's 250 series. Although Monday's action featured several qualifying matches, there were a few first-round showdowns on the schedule that didn't disappoint.

Gilles Muller was the only seeded player in action and had a difficult opening test that he passed with ease against American Donald Young. Past Australian Open quarterfinalist Alexandr Dolgopolov also partook in a three-set thriller but came out on the wrong end versus Go Soeda.

Inclement weather suspended play on Monday, and an updated draw schedule can be found at ATPWorldTour.com in addition to all the match statistics.

Monday 1st-Round Recap

The match between Lu and Jaziri saw the former gain the upper hand early, but Lu had to gut out a 14-12 tiebreaker in the second set to advance.

Lu staved off six set points in the tiebreak. Much of Jaziri's second-set push came as the result of holding serve better. After winning just 46 percent of first-serve points in the opening set, Jaziri took 13 of 18 such rallies during the second.

It still wasn't enough to force a third against Lu in a most memorable opening-round battle.

"Tough 1st round win @BBTAtlantaOpen today. I'm feeling very sorry for Malek cause of some controversal [sic] referee decisions, especially on match point! But happy to start a very long @USOpen series with a victory," said Lu in an Instagram post afterward.

After breaking to win the first set, it appeared Dolgopolov was well on his way to getting through to the next phase of the tournament at Atlantic Station. Then Soeda turned it on, claiming a second-set tiebreak before winning the decider handily.

At least Dolgopolov made some history in the process of his otherwise disappointing early exit in Atlanta, per SpazioTennis.com's Fabio Valente:

Dolgopolov's talent was apparent in the 16 aces he smashed on the hard courts, yet he was still far too erratic with nine double-faults in the match, including five in the final set. Perhaps the 10 aces Dolgopolov hit in the second set he lost made it a bit disheartening to stick through the third and move forward.

In what should have been more of an even match if Young were on, Muller seized control and surrendered just three games to the USA's skilled but perpetually slumping southpaw.

Young didn't use his serve as a weapon often enough, managing to win a meager 13 of 27 first-serve points across the two forgettable sets he had. Even when Muller hit just 36 percent of his first serves in play in the second set, Young couldn't capitalize on nearly enough of the more favorable offerings on return.

Tuesday figures to bring about more excitement by nature with more matches and a plethora of homeland players taking the court. No. 1 qualifying seed Denis Kudla advanced Monday with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Marinko Matosevic and will take on U.S. compatriot Ryan Harrison in the second stadium match.
