Latest Joe Burrow Rumors After Bengals QB's Viral Comments on His NFL Future

Mike ChiariDec 13, 2025

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow's recent comments about not having as much fun playing football as he did in the past reportedly may have been out of frustration rather than a desire to play elsewhere.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports spoke to an NFL source who said Burrow's remarks were "blown out" of proportion. The source added, "He was emotional on his birthday and pissed that for as much as he's worked, he's still not able to win. That's all he wants to do. … If he cannot win he's miserable."

A reflective Burrow told reporters Wednesday, "Do I have fun playing? I mean, how much? Winning's always fun, but in general, was it as fun as before? No, I wouldn't say it was that way."

When asked to describe a "changing point" of when football became less fun, Burrow responded, "Reflection—reflection on a lot of things that I've done and been through in my career, I think. And I've been through more than most. Certainly not easy on the brain or body, so just trying to have fun doing it again."

Burrow went on to add that "there's just a lot of things going on right now" in his professional and personal lives.

In the wake of Burrow's viral press conference, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that other NFL teams "took notice" of what he said:

That led to speculation that Burrow would perhaps request a trade out of Cincinnati, or that he would even consider stepping away from football at an early age, just like Andrew Luck did with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019.

Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, sources close to Burrow dismissed the idea that the superstar quarterback is looking for a way out via trade or retirement.

One source said, "Everyone is being a little dramatic. This isn't mental health, this isn't depression, this is I want to win."

Another source noted, "Nothing matters to him but playing this game and winning a Super Bowl."

Given Burrow's passion for football, his frustration is understandable given how things have gone for him and the Bengals over the past three seasons.

In 2023, Burrow missed seven games due to a wrist injury, and the Bengals went on to finish 9-8 and missed the playoffs.

Burrow bounced back individually last season, completing 70.6 percent of his passes for a league-leading 4,918 yards and 43 touchdowns to go along with nine interceptions. However, the Bengals missed the postseason with a 9-8 record again due largely to a defense that allowed 25.5 points per game.

Cincy finally got off to a good start this season by winning its first two games, but Burrow suffered a turf toe injury that kept him out of action for nine games.

There was some thought that Burrow would miss the rest of the season, but he returned to lead the Bengals to a win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving, keeping Cincinnati's slim playoff hopes alive.

They may have gone belly up last week, though, when the Bengals blew a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead in a 39-34 road loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Burrow threw a pick six to Bills cornerback Christian Benford, giving Buffalo the lead with 5:25 remaining, and Burrow then threw an interception on the next drive, which led to another Bills touchdown.

A source told Russini, "When was the last time Joe made two mistakes to lose a game for any team he's been on? He knows he has to be perfect for this team to win, and he wasn't perfect."

At 4-9, it is highly likely the Bengals will miss the playoffs for a third straight season, barring collapses from both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ravens in the AFC North.

That is a fate no NFL team with a top-five quarterback should ever face, but Burrow's injuries and deficiencies on defense and the offensive line have put the Bengals in this position.

While Burrow is understandably frustrated, there is no indication it will lead to him and the Bengals parting ways, as Russini reported that Burrow "hasn't asked for a trade or even hinted at stepping away."
