Osi Umenyiora to Retire with Giants: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

After 11 seasons in the NFL, defensive end Osi Umenyiora is set to retire this offseason.

According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, Umenyiora and the New York Giants are discussing "a ceremonial one-day contract" so he can retire with the team where he spent his first nine seasons. A source confirmed that report to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports noted that Umenyiora's decision to retire is likely to stick, tweeting he's now likely to explore other options:     

Umenyiora posted 435 tackles, 85 sacks, 35 fumbles and 14 fumble recoveries in his 11 seasons. From 2004-13, he notched at least six sacks in every season, though in 2014 with the Atlanta Falcons he only accumulated 2.5 sacks, his lowest total since his rookie year.

He was also a two-time Pro Bowler (2005, 2007) and was an Associated Press first-team All-Pro selection in 2005, when he had a career-high 14.5 sacks.

Now, he will perhaps be looking to follow in the footsteps of former teammate and defensive end Michael Strahan, who went on to great success as an analyst and television host following his NFL career.
