Brady Cook to Start for Jets vs. Jaguars, Who Is NY's New QB2 with Fields, Taylor Out?

Injuries to Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields have opened the door for undrafted rookie Brady Cook to make his first career NFL start for the New York Jets.

Head coach Aaron Glenn announced on Friday that Cook will be the starter on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Glenn added that Adrian Martinez, who was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday, will be elevated to the 53-man roster and serve as the backup quarterback on Sunday.

Taylor left in the first quarter of last week's loss to the Miami Dolphins due to a groin injury. Fields didn't suit up for that game due to a knee injury that popped up during their first practice of the week.

All signs this week indicated that neither quarterback would be back for Week 15. They both sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday, per the team's official injury report.

In naming Cook the starter on Friday, Glenn said the Missouri alum took all the first-team reps in practice this week.

Martinez became a free agent on Dec. 9 after being released by the San Francisco 49ers. He spent six weeks on the Niners' active roster as their backup while Brock Purdy was out due to a toe injury.

An undrafted free agent in 2023, Martinez took his first NFL snap in San Francisco's Week 9 win over the New York Giants. He was on the field for the kneel-down at the end of the game after Mac Jones subbed himself out to get the 25-year-old his first career appearance.

Cook, who took over last week after Taylor left, went 14-of-30 for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions against the Dolphins.

New York enters Week 15 in last place in the AFC East with a 3-10 record. The Jets will play three of their final four games of the season on the road, starting with Sunday's matchup against the Jaguars at EverBank Stadium.
