Oilers Land Tristan Jarry, Spencer Stastney in Penguins, Predators Trades

Adam WellsDec 12, 2025

Looking for a spark amid a slow start and additional depth due to a series of injuries to their roster, the Edmonton Oilers made two trades on Friday morning.

The Oilers announced they have acquired Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak and a second-round pick in the 2029 draft.

In a separate deal, the Oilers landed Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators for a third-round draft pick in 2027.

Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic noted that neither the Oilers nor Penguins retained any salary in their trade.

These deals come after Edmonton announced on Thursday that Connor Clattenburg and Jack Roslovic were going on injured reserve, while Jake Walman was transferred to long-term injured reserve.

The most interesting part of the deal is the Oilers swapping out Skinner, who has been their No. 1 goaltender for four seasons. He has struggled in 23 appearances this season, allowing a career-worst 2.83 goals per game with a career-low 89.1 save percentage.

Jarry has a 2.66 goals against average and 90.9 save percentage in 14 appearances for the Penguins this season.

Edmonton also gains long-term certainty since Jarry is under contract through the 2027-28 season. Skinner is in the final season of his current deal.

Poulin is a wild card ticket for the Oilers as a former first-round pick who has yet to carve out a role in the NHL. He is only 24 years old and has appeared in a total of 15 games over the past four seasons.

Pittsburgh could afford to move on from Jarry because Arturs Silovs is an emerging talent at 24. The trade also brought back a future second-round pick that the organization can use to build for the future with the Sidney Crosby-Evgeni Malkin era winding down.

Stastney will likely just slot into the role left open due to Walman's injury. The 25-year-old has nine points and 25 blocks in 30 appearances with the Predators this season.

Roslovic hasn't played since Nov. 25 due to an undisclosed injury. He isn't expected to return until sometime around the end of the month. Clattenburg has missed the last three games due to an eye injury.

Tony Brar of Oilers TV (h/t CBS Sports) reported on Dec. 7 that Clattenburg would miss at least one week.

If the Oilers didn't retroactively put Clattenburg on IR from when he originally sustained the injury, he will be out until at least Dec. 18.

Coming off four consecutive seasons with at least 100 points and back-to-back losses in the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers have struggled to start the 2025-26 campaign.

Defense has been their primary issue with the seventh-most goals allowed per game (3.39) in the league. They currently own the No. 1 wild card spot in the Western Conference with 34 points, but they are fourth in the Pacific Division.
