Rivers spent his final NFL season with the Colts in 2020 before retiring as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, the franchise that drafted him fourth overall in 2004. Despite his time away from the field, Indianapolis brought him in for a workout and signed him in hopes of avoiding falling out of title contention.
The Colts were put in a desperate situation after starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in their Week 14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. While backup Riley Leonard would've been in line to take over as the starter, he's dealing with a knee injury.
The last time Rivers was active, he started all 16 games for Indianapolis and led the team to an 11-5 record. He threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round in what was then his final appearance on the field.
Rivers was a semifinalist for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2026. Now that he's been elevated to the Colts' active roster, his five-year eligibility window will be reset, so the earliest he could be inducted into the Hall of Fame would be 2031.
The Colts started the year with a 7-1 record before losing four of their last five to fall to 8-5. It won't be easy to top their skid against a 10-3 Seahawks team, but there's a chance that Rivers could be the solution to their ongoing struggles.
