Bryce Young's Case for Panthers Contract Extension Discussed by NFL Insiders
Bryce Young's long-term future with the Carolina Panthers could hinge on how the final four weeks of the regular season play out.
ESPN's David Newton has called it a "no-brainer" that the Panthers will pick up their fifth-year option on Young's rookie contract in the offseason, but their willingness to engage in talks for a long-term extension is another story.
One former NFL coach told Newton that the next four weeks "are vital" for Young to show he can play consistent football to prove himself as a potential franchise quarterback.

"The next four [games] are vital," the coach said. "He lacks consistency. ... He has to play more consistent."
A league executive went as far as telling Newton that the closing stretch this season is "the most meaningful" of Young's career because it "will tell you a lot about what his ceiling is."
Young has come a long way from the quarterback who looked unplayable as a rookie, despite starting 16 games, and got benched after Week 2 of the 2024 season. He was put back in the starting lineup six weeks later only after Andy Dalton was involved in a car crash.
In 22 games Young has played since returning to the lineup, he has thrown for 4,441 yards, 33 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 62.6 completion percentage.
The stats for Young this season don't look bad. He has already set a career-high in touchdown passes (18), averaging his most passing yards per game (194.8), yards per attempt (6.4) and has his lowest sack rate (5.7 percent) through 12 starts.
But the week-to-week consistency hasn't been there for Young. He has seven games with fewer than 6.0 yards per attempt, including four at 5.0 or fewer.
Since Week 9, Young has made five starts. He has fewer than 170 passing yards and at least one interception in three of them. In the other two, he has thrown for 654 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.
One of Young's good games during that stretch was a stunning 31-28 upset win for the Panthers over the Los Angeles Rams.
The fifth-year option for Young is projected to be worth $26.5 million in 2027. His salary would be fully guaranteed, though the salary wouldn't necessarily preclude the Panthers from adding competition to the quarterback room if they don't trust him to be their starter at that point.
Carolina is entering Week 15 with a 7-6 record, tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for first place in the NFC South. Those two teams play twice in the final three weeks of the season, including in Week 18 at Raymond James Stadium.
