Philip Rivers' Colts Contract Talks Revealed in Reports Amid 44-Year-Old's NFL Return
The football world is still reeling from the shock of veteran quarterback Philip Rivers ending his retirement to return to the Indianapolis Colts, and new details have emerged about how everything came together.
As detailed by ESPN's Stephen Holder and Jeremy Fowler, the Colts were put in a desperate situation when starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and backup signal-caller Riley Leonard was diagnosed with a knee injury the next day.
Holder and Fowler revealed that Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen reached out to Rivers "not long after Leonard's injury was diagnosed." The two of them formed a relationship when Steichen was on the coaching staff with the Los Angeles Chargers and still "talk weekly" to this day.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Team sources told Holder and Fowler that Rivers "was immediately open to the idea" after Steichen approached him about being the Colts' emergency quarterback. The "key conversation" between them reportedly "focused on whether the move made sense for both parties."
Albert Breer of The MMQB reported Rivers went through a "30-to-35 throw program" where he "went through the whole route tree."
Breer reported that the ball "was jumping off Rivers's right hand. His feet were quick. He looked sharp."
Rivers turned 44 on Monday and hasn't played in the NFL since 2020. While he led the Colts to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance that season, it remains to be seen if he can be effective after so much time away from the field. Also, he's a semifinalist for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026, and his five-year waiting period will restart if he's promoted to the Colts' active roster.
Still, many team sources feel that Rivers is the best option for an Indianapolis team that is hoping to save its season after early hopes of contending for a spot in the Super Bowl.
"Options out there are slim," one team source said. "He knows the system, so why not? What the heck?"
"We all know who he is," another team source said. "He's not scared of the challenge. He looks forward to it."
