Kyler Murray Reportedly Wanted Influence on Cardinals' Personnel, NFL Draft Decisions

The Arizona Cardinals and star quarterback Kyler Murray appear to be headed toward a divorce this offseason, and more details have emerged about how their relationship deteriorated.

According to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, a source familiar with the situation said that Murray "wanted his voice heard in personnel decisions and draft choices," but for the most part, the Cardinals "dismissed his requests to add certain players."

Weinfuss noted that the one time that Arizona acquiesced to Murray's personnel requests was when the team acquired wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown in a draft-day trade in 2022, "giving Murray one of his best friends and a former college teammate."

Murray has been sidelined with a foot injury since Week 6, and Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon recently announced that he will not return this season while he continues his recovery. This may end his tenure in Arizona, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last month that a source said that "a separation is imminent" between Murray and the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2019.

After being named to the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons in 2020 and 2021, Murray has struggled to recapture the magic that made him one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. His dual-threat ability set him apart from most signal-callers, but his skills have diminished since he suffered a torn ACL midway through the 2022 campaign.

If Murray hits the open market this offseason, it will be interesting to see the level of interest he generates from other quarterback-needy teams. The 2026 draft class isn't dominated by top quarterback prospects, so it's likely that Murray will get the chance to join a new team that will try to help him return to his old form.
