The free agent market has heated up around MLB during the Winter Meetings, with Kyle Schwarber re-signing with the Philadelphia Phillies and Edwin Díaz signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Teams interested in Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, and others continue to wait to see which dominoes will fall and for which clubs those superstars will suit up for in 2026.
Find out the latest on each with this collection of rumors and reports from the game's most respected insiders, as well as predictions for each landing spot.
Update on Alex Bregman and the Red Sox
1 of 3
The Boston Red Sox liked what they had in Alex Bregman in the 2025 season and according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, the team is making re-signing the third baseman a priority.
Bregman played 114 games for Boston, tallying 118 hits, 18 home runs, 62 RBI, and a .273 average. He was an upgrade defensively and, perhaps most importantly, was hailed for his clubhouse leadership.
It is no surprise that the Red Sox would be interested in bringing the veteran and two-time World Series champ (with Houston) back into the fold.
Bregman will not be without other potential suitors, with the Detroit Tigers the greatest opposition to the Red Sox for his services. As Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported, though, the team's interest has not been as evident as expected given how vocal they were about wanting to acquire him last offseason.
While there are other World Series contenders interested in Bregman, the Red Sox appear to be the frontrunners.
Prediction: Bregman returns to Boston
Dodgers in on Kyle Tucker?
2 of 3
The Los Angeles Dodgers did Tuesday what the Los Angeles Dodgers do, stunning the baseball world by signing its best closer, Edwin Díaz to a three-year, $69 million contract.
They may not be finished.
Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that the defending two-time World Series champions are interested in the gem of this free agent class, Kyle Tucker.
"Los Angeles is unlikely to offer Tucker a six- or seven-year deal, according to a person briefed on the team's plans. The club, however, would entertain a shorter three-to-four-year deal with a high annual average value, similar to what Alex Bregman landed last spring when he signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox."
Such a contract would line up with the projected $40.2 million that Spotrac has for Tucker, but it lacks the longevity that some believe the former Astro and Cub could get from other clubs.
Still, the Dodgers are a machine, signing as many top-tier players as it can in an attempt to keep its dominance over the baseball world rolling.
As Rosenthal and Woo added, "The Dodgers know the next collective bargaining agreement will likely include increased financial restrictions, with or without a salary cap. So, why not lose two more draft picks to sign free-agent outfielder Kyle Tucker?"
Prediction: The Dodgers make an offer, but Tucker signs elsewhere for more years
Orioles Targeting Every Major Star Available
3 of 3
The Baltimore Orioles have money to spend and are among the most aggressive teams at the MLB Winter Meetings.
Rosenthal reported for The Athletic, "The Orioles have been involved in discussions for virtually every player at the top of the market this offseason, other than infielders Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, neither of whom would fill a need."
He added, "Outfielder Kyle Tucker and first baseman Pete Alonso are among the free-agent hitters the Orioles are considering. They are also believed to be involved in talks for left-handers Framber Valdez and Ranger Suárez, among other players."
The O's could use a dependable, hard-hitting bat in the lineup and they are currently undecided at first base, which could make Alonso a perfect fit, but the team desperately needs starting pitching.
As much as it wants to make a splash and get back to winning after an immensely disappointing 2025 campaign, it should focus its attention more on Valdez and/or Suárez rather than diverting it elsewhere, on players the front office knows it either cannot afford or do not really need at this point.
Valdez makes the most sense and is a pitcher the franchise has seen plenty of in recent years, but Suárez may be the more consistent of the two at this point. Regardless, either one would immediately upgrade the team's pitching situation, which currently features Trevor Rogers at the ace spot, followed by Dean Kremer, Kyle Bradish, Tyler Wells, and Cade Povich.
Prediction: The Oriole sign a starter before the end of the Winter Meetings, but miss out on the big bats
