Where Philip Rivers Ranks in NFL History in Career Passing Yards Amid Colts Contract

Doric SamDec 9, 2025

After restarting his NFL career by signing with the Indianapolis Colts, veteran quarterback Philip Rivers will have the chance to work his way up the all-time passing yards list.

Per Pro Football Reference, Rivers ranks seventh in NFL history with 63,440 career passing yards.

With 649 yards, Rivers would pass Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger, who ranks sixth with 64,088 yards.

However, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk explained, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will have his say in the rankings very soon. Stafford is just 277 yards behind Rivers with 63,163 career passing yards. He could even surpass Roethlisberger by the end of the season, which would keep Rivers in the No. 7 spot if he manages to do the same.

The 44-year-old hasn't played in the NFL since 2020, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that he's signing with the Colts' practice squad. Indianapolis is hoping that he can fill the void left by Daniel Jones, who suffered a torn Achilles in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There's a chance Rivers could be under center when the Colts (8-5) return to action in Week 15 against the Seattle Seahawks (10-3).
