Mike Vrabel Compared to Bill Belichick by Rival Coach amid Patriots' Super Bowl Push

Scott PolacekDec 8, 2025

Drawing comparisons to Bill Belichick is quite the compliment for any head coach of the New England Patriots, and Mike Vrabel received just that sort of praise from a rival NFL coach.

"Vrabel is a modern version of Bill Belichick—understands all the fundamentals and is really good at situational football," the coach said in a Monday report from Mike Sando of The Athletic.

"The difference is, Bill would never drop the red challenge flag like he's dropping a water balloon on his friend's toe. Bill never would win a challenge or have a big call on the field and motion for a first down on the sideline like he's Michael Irvin in the middle of the star."

Essentially, the coach is saying Vrabel is a more animated version of Belichick, and the result has been plenty of wins for the Patriots this season.

New England is 11-2 and tied with the Denver Broncos for the best record in the NFL. It is quite the turnaround in the head coach's first season with the job considering the Patriots were 4-13 in each of the last two seasons and haven't finished with a winning record since 2021.

Vrabel also went 54-45 with three playoff appearances during his six seasons as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. He took home the 2021 Coach of the Year while leading the team to the AFC South crown, so success is nothing new for him.

He was also a three-time Super Bowl champion during his playing career that included eight seasons in New England when Belichick was the head coach. That he would have some similarities to Belichick is no surprise given his long history with the legendary coach.

And Belichick remains the gold standard when it comes to New England coaches.

He won six Super Bowls during his 24 seasons and helped create one of the league's best dynasties alongside quarterback Tom Brady and a number of other excellent players. He is arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, and Vrabel is looking to bring back the culture of winning for the Patriots they enjoyed during Belichick's tenure.

So far, Vrabel is off to an ideal start.
