Manchester United Transfer News: Louis Van Gaal Comments on Need for Galactico

Gianni VerschuerenJul 26, 2015

During an exclusive interview with the Daily Telegraph's Mark Ogden, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal revealed he believes his team is in need of another game-changing player in order to keep up with the giants of European football.

Despite signing the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin during what has already been a busy summer, the Red Devils manager isn't satisfied, and his comments on Sunday indicate he's looking for a star forward to add both goals and creativity:

"

Chelsea have Hazard. He can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Chelsea also have Willian and Oscar. Manchester City have [Sergio] Agüero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suárez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs, so we have to look also for that kind of players.

When speaking to the English media about the players he already has at his disposal, he made it very clear he wants more:

"

No, you don’t have a good vision I think. We can use much more creativity. We have Wayne, Mata, Depay, Young, Januzaj, Wilson, Herrera. Young has had a fantastic season, but he is not a Neymar and we have to compete with that kind of class.

When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that because they can contribute as they are better.

Ronaldo? He may come, but it is not possible. Why not? Because you have the club [Real], Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend.

"

United appear to be on the verge of selling their top signing from last season, as former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria seems to be on his way to Paris Saint-Germain. Per ESPN FC, the people who run the official club store didn't exactly hide how they feel about the situation:

Di Maria was supposed to be the main creative outlet, the star forward Van Gaal apparently so desperately desires. After a promising start, the Argentina international's 2014-15 campaign quickly came crashing down around him, as he never appeared comfortable at Old Trafford.

He's not the first star to struggle during his first season in a new league, but unlike others, Di Maria seems determined to start over. While nothing has been made official yet, it seems all but certain he'll be leaving for the French capital very soon. Per football writer Pete O'Rourke, possible future team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already welcomed him to the club:

Van Gaal has plenty of creative talent at his disposal, but the likes of Ashley Young are of a different caliber than Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale, to name a few. Andreas Pereira and Adnan Januzaj have talent to spare, but both still have much to learn and will need at least several more seasons of developing before they can be difference-makers on the highest level.

Another addition would be the quickest way to push the team to new heights, but options on the open market may be limited. As Van Gaal suggested himself, someone like Ronaldo simply isn't available at this particular time, no matter how much money the club throws at a possible transfer.

The acquisition of Memphis Depay should boost the side's creativity and scoring ability, and while the 21-year-old Dutchman will need some time to adjust to the Premier League, he appears to have the talent to emerge as a world-class option like Neymar or Eden Hazard in just a couple of years.

But knowing Van Gaal and the numerous shock signings he has already made during his short tenure as United manager, expect at least one more big star to arrive at Old Trafford before the end of the summer. It's now clear the Dutch manager still isn't happy with the players at his disposal, and when Van Gaal isn't happy, Ed Woodward usually spends.
