MiLB Catcher and Manager Ejected, Catcher's Gear and Jersey Wind Up on Field

Kyle NewportJul 26, 2015

Unhappy with being ejected, Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) manager Pat Kelly and catcher Kyle Skipworth decided to protest the umpire's decision by shedding some of their gear and clothing.

In the top of the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Biloxi Shuckers (Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers), home-plate umpire Alex Ziegler ejected Skipworth following a foul ball. It's not clear why Skipworth was tossed, but he wasn't happy about it—at all.

Skipworth had to be restrained while yelling at Ziegler, but even after he got his two cents in, he wasn't finished. The catcher slammed his glove to the dirt and began taking off his gear, eventually hurling his chest protector and shin guards "at" Ziegler.

That would prove to be the finishing touch to Skipworth's night, but his manager was not done defending his player.

Kelly and Ziegler had a long conversation before the umpire eventually tossed the manager. At that point, it was Kelly's turn to go crazy. The Blue Wahoos skipper angrily threw his hat down and then proceeded to gesture as if he was ejecting each of the umpires. Then he yanked off his jersey and whipped it onto the field.

While all of that would have been enough to get his money's worth, Kelly wasn't done. He continued to scream at the umpires and eventually used the rosin bag as deodorant.

Of course, Kelly left to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd.

Kelly talked about the ejections after the game, per Bill Vilona of the Pensacola News Journal:

"

The guy (Ziegler) cussed at him. And the umpire did not admit to me that he did cuss at him. (Skipworth) doesn't react like that. The guy cussed at him and he reacted. I'm only mad when you don't tell me the truth.

Obviously, we have to control ourselves. But when an umpire cusses at you first, it has a tendency to escalate the situation. (Ziegler) wouldn't admit that he said anything to escalate the situation. I have no problem. If you are having a bad night, you are having a bad night. Both teams didn't like the strike zone, so obviously it wasn't very good.

When I'm upset, I do a lot of things. It's not something you plan. Things just happen. I wasn't happy with the crew the whole night.

"

All of that anger led to one great tirade.
