Senior British Open 2015: Final Leaderboard Scores, Prize Money Payouts and More

Timothy RappJul 26, 2015

Marco Dawson came into Sunday with two professional wins under his belt. His third one couldn't have come at a better time.

Dawson and Colin Montgomerie opened the final round of the Senior British Open tied atop the leaderboard at 10 under par, setting up what appeared to be a memorable duel down the stretch.Ā It was Dawson who was able to pull away from the pack on the day, however, shooting a six-under 64 to finish at 16 under par for the tournament and claim victory at the Sunningdale Golf Course in Berkshire, England.Ā

"If I'm trembling you can understand why," Dawson said about what the win meant to him in his post-round interview, via the ESPN broadcast. "I've spent a lot of time practicing and playing over the years. I finally felt like it was time to stop playing conservative and scared. So I finally started playing more loose, and it's just so much more fun playing that way."

Asked why he appeared so calm today, Dawson added, "My swing is good enough that I can hit the shots. You just have to let it go. If it happens, it happens. It happened for me today. Things went my way this week."

Montgomerie played well but simply couldn't keep pace, shooting a 67 on the day and finishing third overall. Defending champion Bernhard Langer matched Dawson's score for the day, finishing a stroke behind the winner and in second place overall.Ā

For Dawson, the win came after a full career, per ESPN Stats & Information:

He took any potential drama out of the final hole, sinking a long putt for birdie to ensure that he would win the tournament after coming into No. 18 a stroke up. It was a clutch moment to end a brilliant day of golf.

Two holes in particular seemed key for the 51-year-old, though, as Andrew Dickson of Sky Sports noted:

Here's his clutch putt on the 18th hole, per the European Senior Tour on Twitter:

DawsonĀ wasn't the only player to post highlight-worthy shots on the day, however. Miguel Angel Jimenez had a pair of beauties on the afternoon:

But the day belonged to Dawson, who will certainly be hoping he can build upon this victory with several more in senior play. It seems clear that the alterations he's made to his game in recent years and his new mentality are paying off in a big way.Ā

The moment certainly wasn't too big for him on Sunday. It looks as though win No. 4 might come sooner than his third one did. Ā Ā
