Will John Cena Wrestle Again After Retirement Match? WWE Icon Explains His Future

Mike ChiariDec 4, 2025

John Cena reiterated Wednesday that he will never wrestle again following his retirement match at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event on Dec. 13.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live (beginning at the 4-minute mark), Cena discussed his retirement, insisting that he is "absolute, 100 percent done" after his advertised final match:

Kimmel pressed Cena on that assertion, prompting Cena to explain why he chose to go out in this manner.

"It's weird, there's a lot of skepticism out there because this has never been done before," Cena said. "I just hope people can come to grips with that because on the 13th—the reason I wanted to give people so much lead time—is being able to perform for two decades, people allowing me into their living rooms week after week, 52 weeks a year, no reruns, you do feel a connection with people. ... I wanted to give people a heads up so people could process whatever closure they wanted for the 13th."

Cena announced last year that 2025 would be his final year as an in-ring competitor, and it resulted in a ton of memorable moments, including a temporary heel turn, breaking the all-time record with his 17th world title win and becoming intercontinental champion for the first time.

The process to determine Cena's final opponent is a unique one, as a 16-person tournament made up for Raw, SmackDown and NXT Superstars, and even wrestlers from outside of WWE, was made for the right to face Cena in his last match.

Gunther and LA Knight have made their way to the finals of the Last Time Is Now tournament, and they will face off on Friday night's episode of SmackDown with the winner going on to clash with Cena on the Dec. 13 Saturday Night's Main Event.

It has been commonplace for wrestlers to retire over the years, only to return to the ring when an enticing opportunity presents itself.

However, given everything Cena has said and the fact that he is already consumed with a hugely successful acting career in Hollywood, there is no reason to believe that he will go back on his word.
