Darius Slay Reportedly Claimed by Bills, How CB Fits on Buffalo's Depth Chart

Andrew PetersDec 3, 2025

A day after parting ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Darius Slay reportedly has landed back on an NFL roster.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the veteran cornerback was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills, so he'll now suit up for the team he went up against last week.

The Philadelphia Eagles also put in a claim for Slay, but the Bills had a higher priority, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Slay was released by the Eagles in a cost-cutting move in March, and he signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Steelers soon after his exit. After being released by Pittsburgh, Slay's agent told Schefter that he was open to continuing his career and would consider signing with another team.

Slay was a healthy scratch for last week's game against Buffalo, and the Steelers instead turned to Asante Samuel Jr. off the practice squad. According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, head coach Mike Tomlin said Slay's benching had more to do with the team wanting to see what Samuel could do than it did with Slay's performance.

Slay, a six-time Pro Bowler, started nine games and played 10 games total with the Steelers, recording 36 tackles and three passes defended. He missed the team's Week 11 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals because of a concussion he suffered in Week 10.

After being released by the Steelers, there was "mutual interest" between Slay and his former team, the Eagles, according to John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, but he ultimately won't get a reunion. That's probably for the best for Slay, considering the Eagles are loaded with defensive talent and likely wouldn't have used Slay that much.

As for how Slay will fit into Buffalo's defense, it's hard to imagine he'll assume a starting role, but he should serve as a solid backup to cornerback Tre'Davious White.

The Bills have looked like Super Bowl contenders at times this year, but also have some rough losses and have dropped two of their last four games. Still very much in the playoff mix, Buffalo will look to handle business against the Cincinnati Bengals this week.
