Lopez previously held the unified lightweight championship before moving up and claiming gold in the junior welterweight division. Stevenson, who is the current WBC lightweight champion, will be moving up to fight at 140 pounds for the first time in his career.
"I have never shied away from a challenge and always chased the biggest fights in the sport because I know I am one of the best boxers in the world," Stevenson said in a release. "Teofimo Lopez will learn that firsthand on January 31 when I take his belt and show him that there are levels to this game. New York, get ready for a spectacular performance as I take over a fourth straight weight division."
The fight will be a homecoming, of sorts, for both fighters, as Lopez is from Brooklyn and Stevenson is from Newark, New Jersey. The two of them have been linked to a potential fight for weeks after trading barbs on social media recently.
Stevenson will enter the fight with an undefeated record of 24-0. He last fought in July when he retained his title with a unanimous decision over William Zepeda. Lopez is 22-1 and is riding a six-fight win streak, most recently defending his titles in May against Arnold Barboza Jr. in a unanimous decision win.
Fans will undoubtedly be hyped to see Stevenson and Lopez finally settle the score in the ring when they meet next month.
