Bangladesh vs South Africa: Winners and Losers from 1st Test

Antoinette MullerJul 25, 2015

Bangladesh and South Africa were forced to settle for a draw in the first Test as two days were completely washed out by rain. South Africa were on the back foot quite often during the Test, most notably after winning the toss, choosing to bat first and being dismissed for 248.

In reply, Bangladesh managed 326, and South Africa's second innings only got as far as 61 without loss before Mother Nature had her say and decided she'd had quite enough cricket. Here's a look at some of the winners and losers from the first Test, add your thoughts in the comments.

Winner: Mustafizur Rahman

1 of 6

Mustafizur Rahman must be wondering what all the fuss surrounding international cricket is about, because he's having a whale of a time.

After getting his limited-overs career off to a flying start, Rahman did the same in his debut Test. He took four wickets in the first innings and finished with a bowling average of 14.50. Not bad for a bowler who has gone against convention and opted not to be a spinner, despite the fact that conditions are ideal for spin in Bangladesh.

Rahman is just 19 years old, and if his current performances are anything to go by, the future is looking bright.

Winners: Bangladesh

2 of 6

Bangladesh will be by far the happier of the two teams. Before the rain came down, it looked almost certain that they would take the Test into a fifth day. If that had happened, it would have been the first time they had ever managed that against South Africa.

The Proteas are a strong unit, but the fact that Bangladesh did not allow themselves to be intimidated by them will be a massive a boost going into the second Test.

Loser: The Weather

3 of 6

There’s not much to say about just how frustrating the weather was, really. The Test looked to be shaping up for an intriguing finish, but that was ruined by rain. After staying mostly at bay during the limited-overs series, it was massively frustrating to have two days completely washed out.

Winner: Stiaan Van Zyl

4 of 6

Although Stiaan van Zyl needlessly got himself out in the first innings, he has shown signs of being a really solid opening option for South Africa. Not only is his technique solid, he also showed that his dibbly-dobbly bowling can offer an extra dimension to South Africa’s attack when they need something a little bit different.

Loser: Quinton de Kock

5 of 6

Quinton de Kock had a few decent dismissals behind the stumps, but he got involved in a little bit of argy-bargy with Tamim Iqbal, for which he was fined. De Kock is currently in some terrible form, and getting into arguments with players is the last thing he needs to be doing.

Winner: Dale Steyn

6 of 6

Dale Steyn was clearly far from his best, and it took him until the embers of Bangladesh’s first innings to get aggressive. He still finished with three wickets, though, and he is now just one off the 400-wicket milestone.

But Steyn mostly won off the field. While the rain was falling and the teams were stranded in the hotel, he went for a game of street soccer with a group of kids he had spotted from his hotel room. You won’t find many players doing that.
