The Chiefs remain third in the AFC West behind Denver and the Los Angeles Chargers, but now trail Houston and Pittsburgh in the Wild Card race. They sit three spots back of the final playoff position in the AFC as a once hopeful Super Bowl contender watches its chances dwindle.
Mahomes threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns while completing 23-of-34 passes, connecting with Rashee Rice for two scores as Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown each added touchdowns.
Dak Prescott threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, completing 27-of-39 passes. CeeDee Lamb finished with seven receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown.
The Cowboys improved to 6-5-1 and continued their own climb toward the last Wild Card spot in the NFC, moving ahead of the Carolina Panthers and sitting two positions back of the final berth.
Fans reacted to Kansas City's Super Bowl ambitions slipping away after the loss.
Despite Prescott throwing an interception on Dallas' first drive, the Cowboys entered halftime ahead 17-14 after holding Kansas City scoreless in the second quarter.
The lone score in the third quarter came on a Dallas field goal that stretched the lead to seven entering the final 15 minutes.
Kansas City opened the fourth with a touchdown to pull within a point, but Dallas answered with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to push the lead back to seven. The Cowboys added a field goal to make it a two-score game, though could not shake the Chiefs who responded to cut it to a field goal with just under 3:30 remaining.
Dallas secured a first down to drain the clock and seal the win.
The Cowboys will hit the road next Thursday to face the Detroit Lions, while the Chiefs will host Houston next Sunday.
