Justin Fields Reveals Reaction to Jets Benching, Sidesteps Question About Future

Scott PolacekNov 26, 2025

Justin Fields publicly addressed his benching and what the future holds on Wednesday ahead of the New York Jets' game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

"I did not anticipate it whatsoever," he told reporters of being benched for Tyrod Taylor.

He also said he believes he will start again in the NFL and did not reveal whether he wants to return to the Jets in 2026.

Fields is under contract with New York through the 2026 campaign, although ESPN's Rich Cimini reported Sunday that releasing him during the upcoming offseason remains "the likely scenario."

While that would mean a $22 cap charge and $10 million cash payout, the Jets could spread the cap hit out over multiple years.

Cimini also noted the Jets won't keep Fields next season unless they can renegotiate his contract since he will be due to make $20 million. That would be quite expensive for someone who is now a backup for the AFC East team.

There was a time when Fields was seen as a potential franchise quarterback when the Chicago Bears selected him with a first-round pick in 2021. He was an electrifying playmaker at times, especially when he took off as a runner, but he was never consistent enough to live up to his potential and expectations.

He went 10-28 as a starter in Chicago, although the record was at least better for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season when he went 4-2 before being benched for Russell Wilson.

Fields is still just 26 years old and has a history of making plays with his legs. He was also a first-round pick just a handful of years ago.

It wouldn't be surprising at all if another team gave him a chance given that combination, and he indicated he believes that will happen at some point down the line. Perhaps he can eventually become a more consistent passer with another change of scenery, but he is now second string for the Jets.
