Will Vikings' J.J. McCarthy Play vs. Commanders? Latest Update on QB's Injury Status
Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is getting closer to a return to the field.
ESPN's Kevin Seifert reported on Thursday that McCarthy has been cleared from concussion protocol ahead of Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders.
McCarthy was placed in concussion protocol after reporting symptoms following Minnesota's 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12. Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer took over the first-team reps in practice and started the team's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, throwing for 126 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions in a 26-0 loss.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
This marked the third time that McCarthy was injured during the 2025 season, as he also missed time after suffering a high right ankle sprain in Week 2 and a bruised right hand in Week 10. After missing his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a torn meniscus, his first year as the Vikings' full-time starter has fallen well below expectations.
In six games this season, McCarthy has thrown for 929 yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions while adding two rushing scores. His 54.1 percent completion rate ranks last in the NFL.
The Vikings had turned to Carson Wentz in McCarthy's previous absences, but the veteran backup was placed on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery.
With McCarthy looking set to return, the Vikings (4-8) will be hoping he can help them end their four-game losing streak when they meet the Commanders (3-9).
