2025 MLB Free Agents Rumors, Predictions for Kyle Schwarber, Edwin Diaz, More

Erik BeastonNov 25, 2025

Kyle Schwarber is expected to be one of the biggest free agents available this offseason and a completely unexpected suitor may be in line for his services.

That topic headlines this collection of free agent rumors from some of baseball's most trusted insiders.

Find out where Schwarber, Edwin Díaz, and Michael King may land with predictions for each.

Will The Pirates Spend This Offseason?

The Pittsburgh Pirates are notorious non-spenders but this offseason could be different.

Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported the NL team is interested in adding Kyle Schwarber, as well as Jorge Polanco, Ryan O'Hearn, and Kazuma Okamoto.

Spotrac has Schwarber's market value at four years, $99.6 million, which would make it the largest contract ever paid out to a single player in franchise history. That may be too much of an ask for a team in that market, but the fact that they are at the heart of any free agency conversations is a nice change of pace.

The heavy-hitting DH blasted 56 home runs in 2025 for the Phillies.

Even if it gets one or two of those other players, it would be considered a win for an organization that is usually attached to trade discussions because they are looking to offload players.

They will not land Schwarber, unless they pony up an unheard of amount of money, mostly because the prospects of him signing one last, big contract with a team that is unlikely to be in the playoff hunt are sub-zero.

Still, the potential is there for the team to make more noise than normal this offseason, to the delight of a fan base unfamiliar with it.

Prediction: Schwarber stays in Philadelphia

Can The Mets Convince Edwin Díaz to Stay?

Edwin Díaz was the best closer in baseball in 2025, with a 1.63 ERA, 98 strikeouts, a WHIP of 0.87, and a 6-3 record.

It is no wonder that he exercised his option to test the free agency market, nor is it a surprise that he figures to have plenty of teams vying for his services.

Rosenthal reported that his asking price is similar to what he signed his last contract for: five years, $102 million.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Mets are Díaz's first choice.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the Mets would prefer a shorter-term contract, somewhere in the three-year realm.

The Mets already have significant work to do with their bullpen and ensuring its finest piece, an All-Star closer who has rarely been the problem when it comes to New York's pitching woes, should be a priority.

How willing Díaz is to take a shorter deal will ultimately determine if the two teams continue their partnership.

Prediction: Díaz returns to Queens

Marlins Interested in Starting Pitcher

Rosenthal and Drellich also reported that the Miami Marlins are interested in former Yankees and Padres starter Michael King.

The Marlins, like the Pirates, are not known spenders so the idea that they are interested in adding a potential high-priced free agent suggests they may be doing a front office about-face this year.

King went 5-3 in 15 games for San Diego this season, with an ERA of 3.55 and a WHIP of 1.20. It was a down season adversely affected by two different injuries in 2025, the first being a long thoracic nerve issue and the second being a knee injury.

Still, King was a Cy Young candidate in 2024 and should return to form when healthy.

For the Marlins, the question is whether he will be joining a pitching staff that includes Sandy Alcantara or not. He has been the subject of trade talks for two seasons. If he stays, Miami may have a starting rotation that could catapult them into playoff contention if health is not a factor.

Prediction: King leaves San Diego, signs elsewhere, Marlins or not
