Hal Steinbrenner Explains Yankees' Free Agency Strategy amid Concerns over Payroll
The New York Yankees were once known as one of the biggest spenders in free agency, but they've become more frugal in recent years.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner explained the team's approach to free agency on Monday, saying that the recent trend of cautious spending has become a necessity.
"Would it be ideal if I went down [with the payroll]? Of course. But does that mean that's going to happen? Of course not. We want to field a team we know we believe could win a championship," Steinbrenner told reporters.

Steinbrenner added that the Yankees finished the 2025 season with a payroll of $319 million. He went on to assert that it's "not fair" to assume the team makes a profit.
"I don't want to get into it, but that's not a fair statement or an accurate statement," he told reporters. "Everybody wants to talk about revenues. They need to talk about our expenses, including the $100 million dollar expense to the City of New York that we have to pay every February 1, including the Covid year. So it all starts to add up in a hurry."
After making it to the World Series in 2024, the Yankees fell to the AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Division Series this year.
Steinbrenner is certainly hoping the Yankees could break through and earn their first World Series title in 2009, but it doesn't sound like he's willing to break the bank to do so.
