Smith Out 3 Weeks Due to DUI Arrest
Friday, July 24
At 6'2", 215 pounds, Smith gives the Chiefs secondary a unique dimension. Unfortunately for Kansas City, the team will be without that edge for three games, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The team released a statement on Smith's arrest and suspension:
"This morning the NFL notified the club that cornerback Sean Smith will serve a three-game suspension effective Week 1 of the regular season. We respect and support the league’s decision in this matter and will have no further comment on the situation.
"
The 28-year-old corner pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in April, after which ESPN's Adam Teicher anticipated a two-game suspension. The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport explained why the suspension was lengthier than some expected:
Smith has started 87 games over the course of six seasons with the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs, including all 16 in 2014. The former University of Utah standout posted 50 tackles and one interception, and he was expected to be a starter once again in 2015.
As Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated pointed out, defensively, the Chiefs have a difficult schedule to start the season:
Still, Teicher believes Kansas City has enough talent at the position to persevere:
In Smith's absence, first-round pick Marcus Peters should see an increased role. Many considered him the most talented cornerback of the 2015 draft class, and now he'll get his chance earlier than expected.
If Peters doesn't transition smoothly to the NFL, Smith's absence could leave Kansas City in catch-up mode all season.
