Patriots' Drake Maye Declines to Do 'Superman' Celebration amid Cam Newton Comments
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye appears to be done paying homage to Cam Newton following his disparaging comments from last week.
During his pre-game preparations for Sunday's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, Maye declined to do Newton's signature "Superman" celebration while doing a handshake with his teammate:
Maye and Newton became embroiled in some drama when the former NFL MVP questioned the legitimacy of the Patriots' 9-2 start.
"It has fool's gold written all over them, cubic zirconia middle of the mall," Newton said, per Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "And yes, is Drake Maye playing good football? Absolutely. I would like to attest his great play to one specific person that I know too well, Josh McDaniels. Now Josh McDaniels may not be a great head coach, but he is a brilliant offensive mind."
Maye was asked about Newton's comments during his weekly WEEI Radio appearance and threw some shade toward the broadcaster.
"Oh no," Maye said. "I don't even know what show he's on. I think they get paid to make remarks and make certain comments, so just worried about people in our organization think and worry about what we think and my teammates think and, you know, everybody's going to have different opinions, so we just got to go out there Sunday and worry about ourselves."
Seven out of New England's first 11 games came against teams with losing records. Sunday's matchup against the 3-7 Bengals is also a favorable situation for the Patriots as they look to extend their win streak to nine straight games.
Maye, who is an MVP candidate this season, will continue to try to shut out the noise as he tries to lead New England to the playoffs.
