Phil Maton, Cubs Reportedly Agree to Contract in 2025 MLB Free Agency
The Chicago Cubs and right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with a club option for 2028, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
Maton made 63 appearances last year for the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers, who acquired the 32-year-old from the Redbirds for minor league pitchers Skyler Hales and Mason Molina as well as cash considerations.

For the year, Maton went 4-5 with a 2.79 ERA, striking out 81 batters over 61.1 innings and posting a 1.06 WHIP.
Maton is entering his 10th MLB season. He made his debut in the big leagues with the San Diego Padres in 2017. Since then, Maton has pitched for the Cleveland Guardians, Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Mets, Cardinals and Rangers.
Maton posted a 4.76 ERA over his first five seasons, but he's improved steadily over his last four years as evidenced by a 3.33 ERA.
The 2025 season was arguably Maton's best year, and he even struck out 32.7 percent of his batters faced, per FanGraphs.
The Cubs, who won 90 games last year and won their National League Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres, are getting a great asset for their bullpen as they look to make a deeper playoff run next season.
Chicago's 2025 campaign ended in the National League Division Series to the NL Central-winning Milwaukee Brewers, but adding Maton should certainly help the team remain a contender for the division crown.
