Dream NFL Landing Spots for Brandon Aiyuk if 49ers Release Star WR
We don't usually see many contract-related bombshells this late in the NFL season, but Friday's news regarding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was a doozy.
According to Dianna Russini and Michael Silver of The Athletic, the 49ers are preparing for an offseason split with the 27-year-old, who signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension just before the start of last season.
Aiyuk, of course, hasn't played this season while recovering from the severe knee injury he suffered last October. For San Francisco, that's a big part of the problem. If Aiyuk hits the open market in the spring, though, teams will have concerns but will be interested nonetheless.
Let's look at the potential risks and rewards of adding Aiyuk as a free agent and identify the most sensible landing spots for him if he is indeed released.
Examining Aiyuk's Situation

Before we dive into teams that might take a flier on Aiyuk, it's worth examining exactly why he may be available in the first place. Remember, the 49ers had trade offers on the table for the talented pass-catcherāhe nixed a deal to the Cleveland Browns, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Areaābefore locking him up to a lucrative extension.
According to Russini and Silver, Aiyuk has "failed to attend meetings and declined to participate in other team activities," which has led the 49ers to void his 2026 guarantees. Aiyuk is reportedly accepting the situation, hoping that it ultimately results in a change of scenery:
"Aiyuk, according to multiple league sources, told NFL Players Association representatives that he did not want to fight the move via an official grievance. That would clear the way for his expected release at season's end."
For receiver-needy teams, Aiyuk's handling of his recovery may serve as a red flagāthough they'll undoubtedly want his version of why he chose to be uninvolved. For many, a bigger concern will be the fact that Aiyuk tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus just over a year ago.
If teams can ease their concerns, though, Aiyuk could be a fantastic signing for one of them. He's a talented route-runner and big-play threat who racked up 1,342 receiving yards in 2023. He'll only be 28 in March, and his health may require the sort of incentive-laden, "prove-it" deal that would be considered team-friendly if Aiyuk does return to pre-injury form.
Aiyuk won't be a bargain-bin free agent, but he won't to command the $30 million annually that he got in his last deal and that has become the going rate for second-tier receivers.
Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are another NFC West team that may part with a prolific player in the offseason. There have been rumblings that Arizona is prepared to split with quarterback Kyler Murray.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cardinals and Murray are expected to have "extensive discussions" to determine what's next.
If the Cardinals are prepared to rebuild its offense around a new quarterbackāJacoby Brissett is a fine fill-in but no long-term answerāthey could use a receiver with Aiyuk's skill set.
While Michael Wilson has produced with Brissett behind center, Arizona lacks a high-end No. 2 receiver opposite Marvin Harrison Jr. Aiyuk's combination of size (6'0", 200 lbs), speed and explosiveness would give the Cardinals more flexibility in an offense that boasts Harrison and tight end Trey McBride.
For Aiyuk, the Cardinals would provide the chance to return to the state where he played his last two years of college ballāand a couple of chances to go against his former team each year.
Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins could be the perfect landing spot for Aiyuk, if a couple of scenarios unfold.
Right now, Miami is projected to be $796,455 over the 2026 salary cap. That's not ideal, and it's also part of the reason the Dolphins may split with wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Hill is recovering from his own season-ending knee injury and is set to have a $51.9 million cap hit next season. The Dolphins can save $36 million by releasing him with a post-June 1 designation.
While Aiyuk doesn't have the same skill set as Hill, his ability to separate and create yards after the catch would make him a fine fit opposite Jaylen Waddle. That would be especially true if the Dolphins hang onto coach Mike McDaniel.
McDaniel has been on the hot seat, and Miami has already parted with general manager Chris Grier. However, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross wants McDaniel to "continue to be the head coach if at all possible," according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post.
If McDaniel stays, Aiyuk and Miami could be a near-perfect pairing. McDaniel spent two years with the receiver in San Francisco, one as the run-game coordinator and one as the offensive coordinator, before joining the Dolphins.
New York Jets

The New York Jets don't have the coaching connection to Aiyuk that the rival Dolphins do. What New York has is a huge void at quarterback, $114.2 million in projected 2026 cap space and four picks within the first two rounds of next year's draft.
Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey parted with core players at the trade deadline as part of their rebuild attempt. However, they kept No. 1 receiver Garrett Wilson, logically, to aid their next quarterback.
The Jets took a flier on Justin Fields in the offseason but recently benched him in favor of journeyman Tyrod Taylor. According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the "move is not expected to be temporary."
So New York will be in the QB market next offseason. With the team's draft capital, there's a very real chance that the Jets' next quarterback is a highly-drafted rookie.
Pairing Aiyuk with Wilson would give said quarterback two talented pass-catchers who would help make adapting to the NFL a whole lot easier.
For Aiyuk New York could provide the chance to be part of a historic turnaround in arguably the league's biggest market. The Jets aren't good right now, but they have the cap and draft capital to get good in a hurry.
Pittsburgh Steelers

Aiyuk didn't want to join the Browns or the New England Patriots last offseason. He's still probably out on Cleveland, and while New England is now an alluring destination, the Patriots really aren't hurting for receiver help anymore.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, however, may remain on Aiyuk's radar. He was "amenable" to signing a long-term contract with the Steelers in 2024 before accepting San Francisco's offer, according to Russini and Silver.
While the Steelers added DK Metcalf this offseason, they also parted with George Pickens. This means that Pittsburgh still has a desperate need for receiver depth behind its top option.
Now, the Steelers have some uncertainty at quarterback. Aaron Rodgers has mostly played well this season but will turn 42 in December. Pairing Aiyuk with Metcalf would help whoever the Steelers put behind center in 2026 and beyond.
While no one loves a quarterback mystery, the Steelers' QB situation wasn't exactly settled back when Aiyuk was interested. Fields and Russell Wilson were battling for the job during the 2024 offseason.
Whatever drew Aiyuk to Pittsburgh two summers agoāquite possibly head coach Mike Tomlin and the franchise's history of stabilityāis still there.
Seattle Seahawks

While Miami might be a near-perfect destination for Aiyuk, the Seattle Seahawks could provide a dream pairing. Seattle seems to have found it's quarterback in Sam Darnold and it playing like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
The Seahawks also happen to employ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who served in the same position with the 49ers during Aiyuk's breakout 2023 campaign.
Guess what? Darnold was part of that 2023 squad too, even seeing a start as Brock Purdy's understudy.
With all due respect to receivers like Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed and Tory Horton, Aiyuk would provide a massive upgrade as Seattle's No. 2 receiver opposite Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Kupp may be a cap casualty in the offseason, but Seattle may work to extend Shaheed, who was acquired at the trade deadline. However, starting those two alongside Aiyuk wouldn't be overly difficult, given their inside-outside versatility.
For Seattle, signing Aiyuk would create one of the best young receiving corps in the league. For Aiyuk, the pairing would provide plenty of familiarity and a chance to keep chasing postseason success.
