Biggest Questions Surrounding 2026 NFL Season After the Draft 🤔
The 27-year-old is currently set to enter free agency in 2026 after signing a one-year contract worth $3 million with Carolina in March.
While Dowdle rushed for 1,079 yards during his 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys, he opened his 2025 campaign behind Chuba Hubbard on the Panthers' depth chart.
He finally received his first start of the season in Week 5 after Hubbard was ruled out with a calf injury and hasn't looked back.
In seven games since Dowdle was named a starter, he's rushed for 750 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry. He's also factored into Carolina's passing attack, hauling in 18 receptions for 177 yards and one score over that span.
While Hubbard has since returned from his calf issue, Dowdle has remained the team's top running back.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales previously praised Dowdle's rushing style.
"I just love when he runs the ball,'' Canales said, per Newton. "He runs physically. When he finishes his runs, makes the DBs have to show up, make a decision on whether to put a shoulder on him or not, it gets the group going."
"And the guys get really animated when he finishes runs in a violent manner," he added.
If Dowdle hits free agency, several teams will likely be interested in his services. The Denver Broncos are an intriguing landing spot, as starting running back J.K. Dobbins is also set to become a free agent in 2026.
If Denver doesn't bring back Dobbins, it could target Dowdle to pair with RJ Harvey.
The Arizona Cardinals could also be another potential destination for Dowdle, as they're projected to have just over $31 million in 2026 cap space (via Over the Cap). The Cardinals boast several intriguing prospects at running back, but don't posses a clear-cut top backfield option.
For now, Dowdle will focus on closing out the season on a high note as the Panthers look to remain within the NFC playoff picture with a 6-5 record.
