2025 MLB Free Agents Rumors, Predictions for Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox
The 2025 edition of MLB free agency is well underway. The World Series ended on November 1, and free agents have been free to sign since November 6.
However, this doesn't mean that the offseason action is about to die down in the near future. Free agency doesn't unfold as rapidly in Major League Baseball as it does in some other major professional sports.
Big-ticket free agents like Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Framber Valdez and Cody Bellinger will take their time making decisions.
While we don't yet know how this year's hot stove will unfold, we do know that big-market teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox are likely to be major players. Let's dive into the latest buzz and make a few predictions.
Los Angeles Dodgers
1 of 3
The Los Angeles Dodgers are sending a couple of pitchers to free agency. The team non-tendered reliever Evan Phillip and RHP Nick Frasso before Friday's 2 p.m. ET deadline.
What's next for L.A.? Trying to assemble a roster capable of a three-peat.
According to Alden Gonzalez, the Dodgers are specifically looking for a high-end closer:
"A solidified closer, or at least one leverage arm capable of handling the ninth inning on a championship team, will be what they spend the most time on in the coming weeks."
Devin Williams, who struggled with the New York Yankees this past season, could be a terrific target for L.A. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, the 31-year-old is drawing "widespread interest."
MLB Network's Harold Reynolds recently named Los Angeles as a strong landing spot for Williams.
It would seem that both the Dodgers and Williams agree with Reynolds, at least to some degree. The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reported earlier this month that there was mutual interest between the two parties.
Unless Williams receives a can't-refuse offer elsewhere, it could be hard to turn down a chance to play with the champs.
Prediction: Williams signs with the Dodgers.
New York Yankees
2 of 3
While Williams' 2025 season with the Yankees didn't go as expected, New York hasn't completely written him off yet. According to Rosenthal and Sammon, New York and the pitcher's camp have "recently discussed the potential for a possible reunion."
The Yankees are also looking to bring back outfielder Cody Bellinger.
"We'd love to have Bellinger come back," general manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Thursday, per SNY's Phillip Martinez.
According to Martinez, Cashman has "been in contact" with the agents of Bellinger and fellow outfielder Kyle Tucker.
Tucker, who spent last season with the Chicago Cubs, would be a terrific replacement for Bellinger—one who is roughly a year-and-a-half younger and might be viewed as an upgrade.
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter ranked Tucker as his top MLB free agent this offseason, while Bellinger came in at No. 8.
While Bellinger will certainly draw plenty of interest from teams outside of New York, the race to land Tucker might be even hotter. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Dodgers, Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Baltimore Orioles have interest in Tucker, who is likely to command a 10-year contract.
While inking Tucker to a top-of-the-market, decade-long contract would generate plenty of buzz for the Yankees, the prediction here is that they opt to go with the familiar face.
Prediction: Yankees re-sign Bellinger.
Boston Red Sox
3 of 3
Like the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox are looking to bring back a high-profile player who was just added a year ago.
Third baseman Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston in February, but, as expected, he opted-out at the start of the offseason. According to Passan, the Red Sox would like to have him back but will face stiff competition on the open market.
"The Red Sox love Bregman, who opted out of the final two years and $80 million of his contract, and won't close the door on a reunion despite having Marcelo Mayer ready to play third. Detroit and Chicago, which pursued him last winter but came up short, will rejoin the fray, with Philadelphia lurking as it juggles multiple potential paths."
Boston does have alternative options, including Mayer. MLB Network's Jon Morosi believes that Pete Alonso could be Plan 1A if Bregman isn't re-signed:
With Bregman set to command a massive salary, there would be some logic in letting Mayer take over third while chasing another star free agent. As Hall of Famer David Ortiz noted, though, the value of Bregman's leadership can't be overlooked.
"I love Alex, man. I think he's a great player. He's got really incredible leadership. One thing I love about him, he's a team player," Ortiz said on the ITM Podcast (h/t Aaliyan Mohammed of NESN).
Prediction: Boston re-signs Bregman.
